Does UK History Affect Independence Movements? Saturday January 19, 2008 Last year the SNP, the Scottish National Party, became the ruling power in Scotland, with an agenda of making the country fully independent of the United Kingdom (of which it currently forms a large part). While this article entitled Clouding history to muddy waters of independence debate from the Scotsman newspaper discusses some of the more practical, twenty-first century concerns (would Scotland keep any of the UKs nuclear weapons etc.) it also features a look back at how the history of the United Kingdom affects our discussion of Scottish independence, as well as what would happen to the rest of the UK.
