Does UHS have a Community Service Learning Program?
Being involved in activities which serve others can help connect us to the larger community. Every UHS student participates in the Community Service Learning program that integrates volunteer experiences in the community with knowledge of social policy gained in the classroom. Together, faculty and students engage in a variety of projects and research designed to contribute to the community and to examine thoughtfully the tension between individual desires and community needs. CSL helps students explore the meanings and see the links among citizenship, diversity, community, and service to others. Students learn about community issues through participation in group projects in the ninth grade and through weekly courses in the sophomore year which study specific areas, including literacy, biodiversity and the environment, poverty and the family, and basic human needs. With the guidance of teachers and a full-time professional staff, students create an action plan for their remaining year
