Does UCSCs arts faculty here resist technological change?
Given that other UC campuses seem to be resistant in this area, perhaps this is a way UCSC might distinguish itself and attract donors from high-tech industry. Those who don’t welcome and use the new technology are relatively few. Colleagues and especially students have pushed the hesitant. Other UC deans are also seeking industry partnerships. We may have unique opportunities, based on our proximity to the heart of the digital industry, especially with Silicon Valley companies, but we do need the invovement of faculty with demonstrated excellence in these areas in order to develop these relationships. Question: On the one hand, we have an increasing emphasis on computer technology; on the other, we face a continuing funding crunch. How do we reconcile these? We’ve been spending down our reserves in one-time allocations for equipment, and that funding comes at the expense of other things.
