Does tylenol cause the liver disease primary biliary cirrhosis?
On One Hand: Tylenol Does Not Affect the Liver Harmfully.Normal doses of Tylenol (acetaminophen) does not affect the liver adversely. It is used my millions of people annually as an analgesic (pain killer), fever reducer (antipyretic) and anti-inflammatory without any complications. It is an over-the-counter medication sold in almost every drugstore in the United States. On the Other: Dangers of AbuseUsing Tylenol in high doses can cause liver damage resulting in liver damage and cirrhosis (scarring of the liver). If mixed with alcohol, Tylenol becomes toxic at much lower doses. Mixing Tylenol with other medication without consulting a physician can also have disastrous effects on the liver.Bottom LineTylenol can cause cirrhosis but it does not cause primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). PBC is a chronic liver disease that is caused by an autoimmune disorder and research hasn’t shown any connection with Tylenol.
