Does traceability apply to GMOs and GM products only, or also to other food products?
Traceability for certain products has existed for many years. The proposed regulation sets specific traceability requirements for GM products. Traceability specifically for GMOs was introduced in general terms into Community legislation with Directive 2001/18/EC(3) which requires that Member States ensure traceability at all stages of the placing on the market for GMOs. (General traceability provisions have already been laid down in Community legislation concerning food, feed and seed. Legislation for specific traceability scheme for beef products has been put into place as in response to the BSE crisis (Regulation 1760/2000/EC).
