Does this program prepare students to counsel in community settings or a private practice?
The M.Ed program meets the minimum requirements for licensure as an LPC in Texas (please refer to previous question). However, the focus of this program is on counseling within the context of the academic settings. The curriculum includes course work directed toward these settings such as Seminar in Guidance and Approaches to Intervention. The program has required practicum in an academic setting such as public schools, community colleges and universities. Some students do develop interests in community settings and choose to do one of the two required practicum placements outside of the academic settings. Due to the specialized focus on academic counseling, the transition into a community setting or private practice may take additional supervision and training at professional trainings to ensure competence.
