Does this Mozart symphony contain Beethoven chords?
I think I understand you. Those two spots you refer to fall on or near a chord which is restated in the second theme. I followed with an on-line score and found that the bassoons played a C and Eb while the clarinets played a C and Eb an octave higher while the horns held on to a long note. Compare that to the second theme of the third movement of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, where there is a tempo change. Here again, we hear two clarinets and two bassoons with a wide gap between the clarinets and bassoons. Here again, there is a long note, but it is held by the violins. I played Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony at Interlochen. The conductor commented on Beethoven’s technique of writing high notes and low notes and leaving out the middle, thereby creating a soft dynamic effect. I think we should give Mozart the credit, however, because Mozart wrote his symphony in 1788 and Beethoven wrote his in 1811.
