Answer It depends on the relationship between the writer and the director whether or not a writer is “on set” when a movie is shot. Over the years, the Writer’s Guild has been fighting for the right for a writer to be on set when a movie is shot. But more importantly is the desires of the writer and the director for the writer to be there. Some directors absolutely want the writer to be there in case a scene is not working. They might ask the writer to come up with an alternate version of a scene or a line of dialogue. A good director is comfortable with having the writer there as someone they can consult.
