Does the wood effect the tone of the instrument?
This is another where I would be the first to say it does. I’ve found different bodies of the same material can sound totally different. I like using a medium weight swamp ash and one of my favorites is the “Albert Collin’s” clone guitar. It weighs 7 lbs, 11 oz’s. It’s not light but it’s a nice piece of ash sprayed with very thin nitrocellouse lacquer and has one of the greatest tones I could ask for. I find the lighter the woods such as extra light swamp ash, basswoods tend to make the instrument too soft sounding while the heavy ashes and maples are to bright for me. I like to use alder and ash for Strats and Telecasters. Over the years and visiting many great music stores, I’ve been fortunate to check out thousands of instruments and have collected some very fine Heritage, Gretsch, Gibson and Fender instruments.
