Some protections are in place, but you need to take steps to protect your computer too. • Make sure your system software is up-to-date with the latest patches. Students can download anti-virus software free from http://www.washington.edu/computing/software/uwick/ • Be wary of email attachments. • Keep file sharing off except when you specifically need it. • Keep in mind that if your computer becomes compromised and causes problems for others (at UW or elsewhere) your network connection may be turned off until your computer is returned to a safe state.
