Does the United States try to “contain” China?
Most Chinese think so, and by “contain” they mean keep China from becoming stronger and more influential. This is patently false given that the US market and US sharing of technology and expertise have contributed more to the “rise” of China than has any other single country. The US government also encourages China to take more of a leadership role on certain Asia-Pacific issues. Washington does keep military forces in the region partly as an insurance policy against possible Chinese aggressiveness toward US friends and allies. Washington also engages in occasional diplomatic maneuvering to promote US over Chinese leadership in the region, but in this sense China also tries to “contain” the United States.
