When more than one clouds gets collided with each other the charged particles(+ve&-ve)(may be ions) gets collided to produce an electric energy with sound and light. The sound is nothing but thunder and the light is known as lightning. we already know that sound travels speeder than the sound, thus the sound (thunder) will takes certain delay to reach us while the light(lightning) reaches us faster.
