Does the text provide contextual information about the cultures presented?
One reason for teaching literature is to expand students’ imaginative abilities and sympathies by exposing them to points of view and cultural experiences unlike their own. To accomplish this goal, literature texts must represent the cultural and ethnic diversity of our literary heritage. By examining the following levels and corresponding pages, you will get a good look at the quality and richness of cultural information available to your students: Grade 6-p. 354; Grade 7-p. 4; Grade 8-pp. 280-283, 294; Grade 9-p. 4; Grade 10-p. 20; Grade 11-p. 88; Grade 12-p. 399.
