Does the TEXAS Program discriminate against people with children?
No, the TEXAS program does not discriminate and is not intended to exclude anyone. Yes, there are many individuals in situations that are more complex or that make perfect attendance more challenging. Children, particularly young ones, certainly are susceptible to regular bouts with illness requiring extra, unexpected care and attention. But almost everyone faces some sort of occasional challenge. Even those without children may need to care for an aged parent, ailing spouse or other loved one. Families are an important part of our campus community and the university is committed to their well being. We know that parents (and others) will choose to do what’s right, and in some cases, that may mean not participating in this program in a particular quarter. That’s OK; remember there’s no penalty for not being able to participate in the program. TEXAS is an extra incentive, a way to offer a special thanks for better-than-expected attendance.
