Does the tailgate need to be open to completely close and lock the cover?
No. Just use the pull strap to pull it about 1 foot from the tailgate (the intermittent lock system will hold it in place). Just drop the strap down into the bed and then use the aerodynamic handle that is on the top back edge of the cover and pull the cover all the way to the tailgate. When you pull it all the way shut, the spring loaded lock handle will automatically engage on the driver’s side, and the rear safety catch will automatically engage on the rear passenger side, latching the cover evenly and securely at the rear.
