Does the suspension of air traffic put our dependence on it in question?
There are several issues at hand – the logistics of moving hundreds of thousands of stranded air travelers and the dithering of respective governmental authority is of prime concern. The many people – including children who need live saving operations but who are stranded and cannot get to their destination. The impact to each country’s economy will be staggering and we can look to governments to be offering bailouts to major airlines to try and help them over the massive losses they will incur. Small businesses and airlines will fold, unemployment will rise and of course, there is the environmental impact from the ash. The last eruption lasted two years. It is all very well to hanker for the “good old days” when technology was not such a great part of our lives, but that is unrealistic.
