Does the shortest day of the year correspond exactly to the coldest day of the year?
No. The cooling effect takes a bit more time to happen, so even after the days get longer it can still be getting colder. Most cold days are after the shortest day. It works the same the other way too, with the warmest days being after the longest day. In both cases, they can be weeks later. The length of day is only one factor in temperature.
