Does the Schroth Method cure Scheuermanns disease, or kyphosis?
Postural round back, yes. Scheuermann’s disease, probably no, because in that condition the vertebrae are wedge shaped. There is usually 5 degrees of wedging or more in three adjacent vertebrae. Standard treatment is bracing, or surgery if the kyphosis approaches 70 degrees. Scheuermann’s disease is more common in boys. Postural round back is more common in tall, early adolescent females, perhaps because they are self conscious about height and breast development. Exercises definitely help, sometimes with the aid of a psychologist. Physical therapy, including techniques advocated by Schroth have a place in the treatment of spinal curves. US physicians have not been quick on the uptake. But in reality, I have seen many children whose scoliosis has resolved spontaneously. But you have to follow carefully.
