The Upper Lake Whitney Management Study concluded that dredging would not significantly benefit the public water supply & would have negative impacts on wildlife habitat and the unique bird community of the upper basin (north of Waite Street). Additional watershed management was selected as the preferred alternative to manage the upper basin of Lake Whitney. This strategy will help minimize sediment inputs to the reservoir that decrease the water depth of the upper basin and will enhance protection of the public water supply from stormwater related contaminant inputs. Through both land acquisition and purchase of conservation easements, the RWA has contributed to the protection of 237 acres of land in the Mill River watershed since 2001 for open space preservation and stormwater management.
