Does the Quebec government involves itself more in the lives of its residents compared to other provinces?
There are some aspects where this is true, such as in peoples’ names. As an example, there is a panel that can reject any name for newborn children if they feel that it is inappropriate. Mind you, this may not be a bad thing, but it is an example of the government making decisions for people. Another example related to names is the married name for women… well actually, for anyone now that marriage is not limited to a man and a woman in Canada. In Quebec, it is not possible for someone to assume the surname of someone that they have just married – the government does not permit it since 1981. There are a few more examples, although they are debatable as to whether or not they are bad ideas, such as the new legal requirement for vehicles to be outfitted with winter tires during the winter months, instead of all-season tires being acceptable.
