Does the procedure hurt?

Most women find the procedure uncomfortable. Some women, perhaps because they are anxious about the abortion, or just particularly sensitive to pain, describe abortion as being quite painful. Every woman’s body is unique, so every woman’s experience is different.

No, the procedure is painless. Most patients experience only some irritation (usually reported as a burning sensation), light sensitivity, and watering of their eyes for a day or two.

The laser procedure itself does not hurt. A slight pressure may be felt during the procedure. There is a possibility of some degree of discomfort after the procedure for 3 to 4 hours which is easily controlled by medication.

The actual procedure does not hurt; numbing drops are applied to the eyes. You may experience a slight pressure sensation during the procedure. After the procedure, some patients may experience some discomfort, such as mild irritation, scratchiness, dry eyes, watery eyes, redness or sensitivity to light. We recommend sleeping and keeping the eyes closed for the first 4 to 5 hours to help reduce any mild discomfort.

While the procedure does not necessarily cause pain, some patients will describe the procedure as…”uncomfortable”. However, it is typically the fear of the unknown that is the source for most of the discomfort, rather than the actual physical feeling. Prior to your procedure, your eyes are numbed with anaesthetic drops, and many LASIK centers will give you a mild sedative. After the procedure is complete, your eyes may feel irritated or dry, but most patients will nap for several hours following the procedure, and wake up feeling much better. You’ll also be given moisturizing drops for any dryness you may feel in your eyes following the surgery.
