Does the Portsmouth Humane Society adopt animals to anyone?
If you would like to adopt an animal from our shelter but live in a city that is not adjacent to Portsmouth, we can work with you to make sure that you are able to adopt the right animal for you. Applicants wishing to adopt an unaltered animal must reside in Portsmouth, Virginia or an adjacent political district pursuant to Code of Virginia section ยง3.2-6574. If an applicant wishes to adopt a fixed animal, this rule is not applicable. Potential adoptive families must meet our adoption requirements as well as prove ownership of their home or a lease agreement from their landlord that allows pets. These and other requirements must be met because our interest lies in what is best for the animal.
