Does the oscar fish make good pets?
The upside of the Oscar is that YES they can be good pets and often learn to recognize their owners and interact with them. They are one of the few cichlids that has really BIG personality. They love to play with toys and rearrange their tanks. They will drag plastic plants and some times rocks from one end of the tank to the other. Thye will play with a ping pong ball floating in their tank and can even be taught to play fetch as well as do tricks on command if you have the patience and time to work with them. They pout when they’re upset and greet you when thye’re happy. The down side is they require a very large tank. An Oscar can reach 12 – 18 inches (more likely 12-15 inches in captivity) and require a tank minimum size of about 75 -80 gals (best suited).
