No. Effective December 17, 2007, either the NPI or the Medi-Cal provider number is required for all transactions and communication with Medi-Cal. Only “atypical” providers (Blood Banks, Christian Science Practitioner and Multipurpose Senior Services Program) are exempt from submitting an NPI and will continue to use their Medi-Cal provider number.
