Does the NIMITZ operate sonar?
A. No. However, Mid Frequency Active (MFA) sonar is a critical capability used during major training exercises and in practice to locate stealthy, extremely quiet submarines that more and more of our enemies are acquiring. Without the use of sonar, they would be an undetectable force that could move in and out of weapons range unchecked—a serious threat to our national security. When the Navy operates sonar in training exercises, which is the issue in the news today, we work within established Department of Defense operating areas and adhere to protective guidelines approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service.
