Does the new federal law mandate mental health and substance abuse benefits for self-funded policies?
No. If your self-funded policy doesn’t include coverage for mental health and/or substance abuse services, it will not be required to add the coverage under the new law. However, if your self-funded policy includes mental health or substance abuse treatment, it will be required to apply the same treatment and financial limits to those benefits as it does to medical and surgical benefits.
