Does the museum have a collection of Philippine art?
Like most art museums in the country, the Asian Art Museum has a relatively small collection of Philippine arts. The museum’s holdings include a small number of fine textiles and decorative arts from the Philippines. The main reason the museum does not have a large collection of Philippine arts is because Avery Brundage, the ardent collector whose donated collection provided the impetus for the museum’s founding, did not collect Philippine art. One of the museum’s goals is to build up a collection of Philippine arts that will bring the Philippine collection on a level playing field in terms of quality and depth with the other areas represented in the collection. Because of its extremely limited acquisitions funds, the museum relies on the generosity of donors to expand its art collection.
