Does the level of salt in seawater increase as it is left behind by water evaporating into the hurricane?
If a hurricane affects the salinity of ocean water, it is not by an appreciable amount. Water at a given temperature will evaporate whether there is a hurricane in the vicinity or not. As water evaporates from the surface, the remaining water will become slightly denser. As density increases, it will sink and water with less salinity will rise to the surface. The strong winds of a hurricane may actually decrease the salinity of surface water by hastening this overturning process. Learn more about evaporation on this USA TODAY resource page.
