Yes / No; Describe Service learning courses are identified and supported through the college’s Service Learning office. MCC has written criteria for defining SL coursework. In order to qualify as service learning activity students must complete 22 service hours at a community placement satisfactorily within a semester; engage in reflection activities that may include journal entries, essays, papers, participation in class discussion, and/or a class presentation. In order to insure reciprocity with community partners the college required a commitment of 22 hours at an agency when service learning began at MCC in 1992. Since then, community engagement and faculty participation has expanded. MCC is now envisioning service learning as a continuum and plans to change its definition accordingly. This more flexible approach aligns MCC with the national move to more varied community engagement that meets both the needs of the community and the educational goals of students.
