Does the Indian tobacco industry admit that tobacco is harmful?
The industry acknowledges that tobacco is a risk factor for certain diseases. Why isn’t the industry warning people about hazards of tobacco consumption–beyond the statutory warning? The industry believes that tobacco is a personal choice product for adults and cigarettes are legal products operating within the specified legal framework. As such we strictly observe stipulations regarding statutory warnings. Why is the nicotine and tar content of Indian cigarettes higher than that of cigarettes abroad? The Indian consumer has not yet accepted products with the reduced nicotineand tar levels despite products being made available.
