I’ve worked in recruitment advertising for over 25 years, and run my own very successful recruitment advertising agency, but as I flick through a regional newspaper and see the woefully small amount of recruitment ads in there, I know this is not simply due to the recession or the internet. Over recent years, local newpapers got more and more greedy with the ‘cash cows’ of recruitment, property and motors. The first step was to keep narrowing the columns which in effect was a price rise since your 3 column advertisement might have shrunk 3cms in width. The next stage was to reduce ad agency commission, a curious step seeing that ad agencies were the otherwise unpaid sales ambassadors of a newspaper.
