Does the future of Louisiana sugar industry lay with fuel?
The New York Times has a look at efforts by Louisiana sugar cane farmers to create an ethanol market for their crops. Farmers want the Agriculture Department to start buying surplus domestic sugar and put it in ethanol fermentation tanks. What’s driving this effort is the fact that sugar exports from Mexico will expand next year, and farmers are concerned about cheap foreign sugar flooding the market. “Survival is on our minds every minute of every day,” said Todd Landry, a Loreauville farmer.
