I suspect that your use of the term “depression” is a self-diagnosis, as there are far more appropriate terms for your experiences. If you had been through any kind of victim counseling, contact the therapist and ask for the correct nomenclature and I think you’ll be pleased that it bears no negative connotation. You don’t need to relate a full explanation or overly dramatic depiction of the travesties you’ve experienced, as most people can fill-in-the-blanks very well. But to eliminate it all together doesn’t paint the full picture of who you are or where you are in your life. You’re not trying to play on people’s emotions, but rather let them understand what motivates you. Adcoms, on average, receive over 5,000 applications each year and easily 20% will have tragic stories, so you aren’t going to move the AdCom to tears.
