There should not be anything that could snag clothing, jewelry or strings. • Any moving parts that could pinch a child? Equipment may be designed to move when children are playing on it. However if yours is not designed to move and has looseitems, these are hazardous. Repair or replace items immediately. • Are there trip hazards? Equipment may be different heights per age categories. Determine appropriate heights for age ranges per industry standards. • Is equipment well maintained? Unkept equipment may indicate safety concerns. Your elementary school playground design group could create a playground maintence checklist to determine how often when to check playgrounds. • Has the playground been renovated since 1993? Elementary school playground design has come a long way towards implementing safety standards. Outdated equipment does not allow for safe school playgrounds….period.
