Does the entire prostate gland have to be removed or just the part(s) with the cancer?
Removing the prostate in its entirety provides the best possibility of cancer-free survival after surgery. Cancer cells may be randomly scattered throughout the prostate gland so complete extraction of the prostate ensures no cancer cells are left behind. A radical prostatectomy is the removal of the entire prostate, the seminal vesicles and the tissue immediately surrounding them.
