Does the English Department have a required or recommended grammar and composition handbook?
Yes. In 2005 the English Department’s Undergraduate Studies Committee conducted a detailed review of current composition handbooks, and on its recommendation the Department voted unanimously to require Diana Hacker’s A Canadian Writer’s Reference [CWR], 3rd ed. (Bedford / St. Martin’s, 2004) in all sections of ENGL 110 and 112 and to recommend it for all English courses where such a handbook is wanted. Copies of CWR are available in the Campus Bookstore and on reserve in Stauffer Library. See also the interactive web site for CWR, which includes writing and grammar exercises, extensive advice on MLA-style documentation, and further resources such as sample essays and free access to Diana Hacker’s Writing about Literature, 5th ed.
