Does the Economic Bust Help the Bed Bugs Boom?
Does the Economic Bust Help the Bed Bugs Boom? Thursday February 26, 2009#spacer{clear:left}#abc #sidebar{margin-top:1.5em}zSB(3,3) The meteoric rise in bed bug infestations couldn’t have come at a worse time. State and local governments everywhere are strapped for cash, and some cities are falling well short of the aggressive response needed to keep bed bugs from spreading. In New York City, for example, where bed bug numbers have been increasing steadily for several years, the city government’s response was little more than a bilingual flyer. Since bed bugs aren’t known to carry disease, they’re deemed no more than a nuisance. In this economy, mere nuisances don’t get funding priority. The economic downturn seems to be giving bed bugs a leg up. Photo: CDC/Piotr Naskrecki T
