Does the Earths moon have a name?
The last time someone asked this, everyone got into a debate over whether or not it was correct to call the moon “Luna”. Officially, the name for the earth’s moon in English is “The Moon”, capitalized as such. However, older languages and mythologies refer to it as “Luna”, which is where the term “lunar” comes from. As such, “Luna” has become a nickname of sorts in modern usage, but it’s not the official name. Technically, the proper name for any body orbiting a planet is “natural satellite”, with “Moon” specifically referring to our moon, but colloquially, most people refer to those bodies as “moons”. Kind of like calling other stars “suns”. At the end of the day, “The Moon”, “Luna” and “Earth’s natural satellite” are all perfectly acceptable in casual language. As long as people know what you’re referring to, it’s fine. It’s mostly for scientific purposes that you need to be careful about word usage.
