The most obvious is shade. Clouds shade the Earth by intercepting visible light before it hits the ground. This is a form of filter that cools the Earth. Astronomers have also noted that the atmosphere also bends light slightly. Sunsets are red and the sky is blue. These are both caused by effects of the atmosphere. The ozone layer is commonly thought to absorb ultraviolet radiation before it reaches the Earth’s surface. If you consider the Earth’s magnetic field as part of the atmosphere, then there is even more filtering. The field redirects most of the solar wind and radiation dangerous to life from the Sun around the Earth. Some slips in and interacts with the upper level gases to form aurora. I hope this helps.
