Does the District have jurisdiction over the St. Johns River and its tributaries?
The St. Johns River is only a part of the District’s overall responsibility. The District manages 10 major watersheds, or places where water drains and is collected in a body of water. The 310-mile-long St. Johns River, the longest river located entirely in Florida, contains three major basins: the Upper, Middle and Lower St. Johns River basins. The District also manages the Indian River Lagoon Basin, the Northern Coastal Basin, the Nassau River Basin, the St. Marys River Basin, the Ocklawaha River Basin and a portion of the Florida Ridge Basin. Major bodies of water contained in these basins include the St. Marys, Nassau, Matanzas, Halifax, Indian and Ocklawaha rivers and the Indian River Lagoon. The District is also responsible for all groundwater within its boundaries.
