Does the direction of current matter in practical electronics application?
Not in the sense that you are thinking about it. Certain semiconductors allow current to flow in one direction only, but it doesn’t matter if you are thinking about the flow of negative electrons or the flow of positive “holes” (the empty space where an electron should be). Holes simply flow in the opposite direction as the electrons for reasons that should be obvious when you think about it.
