Overview: This is a two-part lab designed to promote awareness of how human interactions with the environment can change the ecosystem unknowingly and unintentionally. This lab should be involved the ecology instructional unit. Please note that is also includes introductory level microbiology. This lab is appropriate for grades 9-12, General & Honors Biology. This lesson and lab will take a few days to a week to complete. This lesson involves the students taking an agar plate with either pH 5 or pH 7 setting it outside for 5 minutes and seeing what grows three days later. The students will see what pH allows which microorganisms to proliferate. The students will take soil samples from their own environment and analyze it by using a Vernier pH sensor.
