Does the design of the Square have any special significance?
The Square is unique in Brisbane as a rare example of formal planning. It is much admired for its architectural quality. It comprises the War Memorial Shrine and paved area situated at the level of Adelaide Street, which is reached by a large flight of steps curved around the side of the Shrine. The Shrine forms the focus of three radially patterned pathways which symbolise the three armed services, pools and lawns of the lower park area, which is planted with symbolic trees, and features individual memorials. When looking at the formally designed Square both sides are mirrored, symbolising that this is a place for reflection.
