Does the current strain of H5N1 avian influenza virus spread from person-to-person?
Effectively, no. Of the 120 confirmed H5N1 human infections to date, it is thought that person-to-person spread of the virus may have occurred in several cases, but only to family members who had close, unprotected contact with the case. Therefore, the current H5N1 strain could not cause a pandemic.
