Does the creation of stem cells for the treatment of disease require embryos to be destroyed?
The current law, signed by George W. Bush, bans stem cell research on the grounds that embryos must be destroyed in order for stem cells to be obtained. Further scientific advances follwing the passing of that law have totally invalidated that assumption, there are many other sources from which stem cells can be obtained and scientists’ ability to use them for useful work is increasing every day. The current law is a hindrance to scientific and medical advance. It is also arguably denying people medical benefits of advances in stem cell research while not saving a single embryo.
