The Task Group accepted the rise in numbers and the need not only to increase services to older people in their own homes but to improve the quality of these services. Should the Extra Care Schemes model be supported as the next generation of Residential Care? Members of the Task Group were enthusiastic about Extra Care Schemes, but concluded that there should be more of them. At a minimum there should be a scheme in every District Council area making 7 in all rather than the 6 originally proposed: (Crook plus five new schemes) Are Extra Care Schemes in the correct place? There was a strong feeling that the original suggestions should be reviewed as the Schemes were not considered sufficiently close to population centres. It was felt that the Derwentside Scheme should be in Consett, the Durham Scheme should move to the west of the City, and the Easington development should be located in Seaham.
