Does the colour of taxis matter?

WHAT colour do you think taxis in Medway should be? That’s the question Medway Council is asking people who use taxis in the area. The review follows representations made by the taxi trade. At the moment the council says that all taxis (hackney carriages – white and private hire vehicles – red) should be white or red. Licensed drivers have until November 2005 to comply with the ruling to be a uniform colour. Councillors agreed the specification because they thought standardising the colour of taxis in Medway would improve public safety and the quality of the taxi fleet in Medway. Councillors also felt that it would help to identify Medway taxis. Every licensed driver in Medway (600 plus) is being asked for their views and so too are Medway residents who use taxis. The results of the survey will be discussed by the Finance and Performance Management Overview and Scrutiny Committee.
