DOES THE CLOUD SCHEME INTERACT WITH THE CONVECTIVE SCHEME?

The convective scheme works as advertised, it produces convective precip and “pretend clouds” that go into the radiation scheme only, there is no cloud water that is produced by the convective scheme. The problem is that we don’t know how to correctly tie in the convective cloud to the cloud water, which would then tie into the “grid-scale” precipitation scheme. I’m not explaining it very well, but the convective scheme sort of takes the formation of clouds into account in its final result, so the only output we should be using from the Betts scheme is the temp and moisture changes along with precip at the ground. A separate parameterization is used to come up with some cloudiness in the radiation scheme that is based upon the convective rainfall. The cloud water scheme is not involved directly in the process of producing convective rain at the moment, we should use a different convective scheme if we want it to produce convective cloud water, the Betts isn’t intended for that.
