Does the City of Nanaimo have a Heritage Register?
Yes. In 1998, the City published an inventory of heritage resources entitled “The Heritage Resources of Nanaimo.” Approximately 125 historic buildings were included on this inventory plus 6 historic cemeteries, 15 historic structures, sites and objects, and an assortment of historic landscape features. In 2001 an additional 17 buildings were added to the inventory. On 2002-Oct-07 a modified version of this inventory was adopted by City Council as the City’s official Community Heritage Register. Since 1998, the Nanaimo Community Heritage Commission has been maintaining the inventory list and recently completed a review of the downtown core that resulted in 10 new buildings being added to the inventory.
