Does the Canadian government evaluate academic credentials?

The responsibility for education, and the evaluation of academic credential is the responsibility of provincial governments, not the federal government, in Canada. There is no federal government agency in Canada that evaluates academic credentials. WES is recognized, and funded in part, by the Government of Ontario, but our reports are accepted across Canada. The Canadian government has a Foreign Credential Referral Office, which will refer people to recognized evaluation services such as WES.
